Ditto all the other comments. For my wife, it was lessons with a captain to learn docking skills (she almost always docks now), working the main during races, and most importantly, a "friend" who made fun of her one day. It wasn't so funny at the time but certainly motivated her.
20 years and about 10,000 miles later she can more than hold her own against experienced sailors. And yes, she took more than her share of night watches offshore. Love that woman!
