I responded earlier about the MFDs before considering what someone else said about single handing and solo tacking. You should ensure that you can reach an autopilot control from in front of the wheel (not through the wheel). With the components you already have it sounds like your temporary install location might have been just about perfect. Mine is low on the port foot well wall, centered fore and aft on the wheel which makes it equally accessible from in front or from behind the wheel. I never considered what a good compromise its location is.
