Hi Rick,
     Good points.  Two reasons for a mid ship cleat.

1.  Not all docks (and Piers) have mid cleats.
2.  The chocks at the bow and stern of my C&C are not big enough for 2-5/8"
dock lines, so chaffing is an issue.
