Hi Ian,

I'm a bit late coming to this discussion, but all the advice already given
is quite accurate. I pulled and rebuilt my A4 in *Trillium* back in 2010,
and chronicled the whole experience in an article in Good Old Boat in the
January/February 2011 issue. I think you can get back issues on line at the
Good Old Boat website (
https://goodoldboat.com/shop/back-issues/2011/2011-76-januaryfebruary/).
There have been comments in this email exchange of lifting the engine with
the boom which is shown in photos in that GOB article. In my case, after
dismantling the engine, I sent the head and block to Moyer's for
re-machining, and then reassembled the engine before re-installing it. I
followed Don Moyer's rebuilding guide scrupulously. I would recommend also
taking a hard look at the condition of the engine beds. I removed the old
beds and installed new ones. You are also wise to look at the fuel tank. I
replaced it completely, especially after putting my finger through the
bottom as we were removing it! One comment I received from someone who had
previously rebuilt an A4 was "Weren't you surprised by how few pieces there
actually were to this engine!"

Good luck. It's a very satisfying process.
