Most (as in "check your transmission manual") transmission manuals call for a
neutral gear, when sailing. Iirc, Yanmar had a special bulletin where they said
that if you don't sail in neutral, they would void your warranty (like this
really matters for our boats).

I see.
I just mention it, because I think from past discussions there was mention that
shafts spinning in neutral could damage the Transmissions.

Bill,

It is a two blade fixed prop. It spins!

The singing is probably around 400 hz. I might use my phone with the db app
and find what actual frequency it is. It is not a concerning sound, just
wondered if we are unique.

I have thought about a geared feathering prop but the boat bucks always make me
keep thinking. Grace was never raced and has a fixed prop, no adjustable
backstay adjuster and fixed babystay adjustment. I can live with those though
I have thought about prop and hydraulic backstay adjuster.

I don’t think your shaft should be spinning.
Can’t you put it in reverse to stop the shaft from spinning, then neutral? Or
do you not have a folding prop –

Ron,

Yes. We sail with the transmission in neutral and can tell that the shaft is
spinning. We noted it the day that we sailed here home almost three years ago.
We tried to locate the source when we first heard it but can't really locate
the source. She sings on both tacks. It doesn't concern us that she does
this. Just curious if she is unique.

Does it always happen at that speed; in other words, does a different alignment

Hi Neil

No singing on hull #11. We originally had a 2 blade fixed prop, and now are
running a Kiwi Prop.

OK Mark III owners, our C&C 35-3 "signs" with speeds between about 4.5 to 5
knots. It is a definite harmonic signing that I have never been able to
isolate. We have a 2 blade fixed prop and sail with the transmission in
neutral. I am not complaining, I love it when she goes into singing mode. It
goes away above 5 knots and there is no impediment to exceeding that speed. My
question is if "Grace" is unique or does anyone else show this phenomena?

BTW, we noted no singing when we hit 7.7 knots Sunday afternoon.
