A figure which we use at the Washington County Community Garden is $2.00 per
pound. We have gardeners weigh their harvest on a feed scale, and record the
results in a spiral notebook. As the summer goes on, I remove the pages and
tally our "haul" and announce a preliminary tally at our annual pot luck dinner
in August. This year, we harvested over 6,000 pounds of food, with an average
market value of over $12,000, an impressive figure which not only helps to
justify our existence but also proves the value of community gardens to
individuals and the community at large.
An article on food values by Roger Doiron, somewhat outdated but interesting
nonetheless, is found at the Kitchen Garden International site. The article is
easily found if you "google" 'produce value doiron'.
Though we continue to develop community gardens, there are skeptics who
question our existence. Using statistics which reflect economic value can help
in the development or maintenance of community garden sites.
