This came out in 2009 from a study conducted by the National Gardening Association.
A well maintained food garden can yield an estimated 1 to 2 pounds of produce per square foot of garden area over the course of the growing season. The average 600 square foot food garden can produce an estimated 300 pounds of fresh produce worth $600 and a return of $530 base on an average investment of $70. Hello, All: I was wondering if anyone is aware of a calculator program for estimating the amount of food that is grown on a given area of garden during a growing season? I realize that this is extremely variable, depending on the type of crop grown, the number of harvests, management practices, etc.... but perhaps there is an easy calculator that uses averages and also lets you factor in some of these variables? The purpose would be to help us estimate the amount of food (in pounds) that are likely harvested across all of the community gardens that we work with. I'm sure someone else out there has wrestled with trying to figure out something like this...
