About this experiment of mine: I made a mistake!
the LC is set give 384 x 512 pixel, assuming that a Compact uses that. Well, it doesn't. A compact puts out 342 x 512, at least that's what TN14 about the SE/30 mentions. Other sources talk about 340 x 512. (Anybody who can make either one definite?) The 384 x 512 is for the common 'lowrider' LC monitor. Reason #1 for the poor results, I guess.
