the first thing to do is the eraser cleaning trick on the ram and rom, and possibly checking the battery. if that fails, try to borrow a meter and check the +5v and +12v at the hard drive to see if the power supply is flaking out. i does sound like a rom problem, but i'd clean the contacts before i applied more force, and check that the little latches are both grabbing it. you might also unplug and replug both ends of the video/power cable and look at the solder joints to make sure they aren't cracked, and of course make sure the speaker is really connected in case you have 2 problems, one with video and another just because the speaker connector has come loose.
