I called MacWorld Magazine and they said there's a company that re-prints old magazines for a fee, but I don't know if they go all the way back to 1984. Call them and see (Their number is within the first few pages of their latest issue).
Thanks a lot, Ian, but from my experience (quite limited, I admit) I am quite wary of such re-print facilities, as what they usually offer is inferior to the original print. Same goes for many digital archives; their quality is sometimes fax-like -- just good enough to decipher the text, without much care for the illustrations.
That's why I'm interested in high quality scans of the original thing. That's also the reason I already rescanned some of the articles that are available publicly on the WWW -- just to have better quality illustrations.
In any case, Dan here offered to help (thanks a lot!), and I sent an email to editor-in-chief asking for permission.
