Finally got around to testing the network connection between my SE (System 6.0.8, ethernet PDS) and G4 (OS X 10.3.7). The G4 sees nothing-- not surprising. The SE sees the G4 in the chooser, but when I try to connect, I get:
This server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocol. You cannot connect to it. Please contact the server's administrator.
Arrrg...
I'm looking for an easy way to transfer files from one to the other. preferably without moving up to System 7 on the SE.
Any ideas?
Marten's excellent System 6 Heaven (http://www.euronet.nl/users/mvdk/osx.html) describes how to network System 6 to 10.1. If memory serves, something similar works for 10.2, but Apple broke it with 10.3. As far as I know, the only things you can do are:
- upgrade the SE to System 7 (you might even need the OS 8 AFP client)
- downgrade the OS X machine to 10.1.x or 10.2.x
- install an intermediate server system running Mac OS 8-10.2
- figure something else out, such as using FTP as Doug suggested
I'll be going the "intermediate server" route...
Good luck!
