I may have done it. . .

I'm using System 6.0.8 and an SE PDS ethernet card to
connect;
using Internet Sharing in Mac OS 10.2.8 through the
ethernet port of my iBook. I can mount the drives,
but I can't seem to get on the net with Mac WWW. I
figure this is because MacWWW requires a dialup
connection.

I also want to get Eudora set up; but that requires
either MacTCP (ie, dialup) or the "Communications
Toolbox"-- what is that, and where can I get it?

Sounds like your dns setting is wrong, MacWWW works here (sorta). It doesn't require dialup just a properly configure tcp stack. As a rule here the dns setting points to the server box, in your case the OSX mac.

You will need to run Mactcp to create a tcp stack on the SE. This is what all internet apps require to use the internet. The "dailer" program used on a dialup connection is only used to control the modem and negotiate a connection for the tcp stack program - its not required with a ethernet connection.

http://www.i-55.com/mac2/tcpinst.html is sort of useful, the window should contain localtalk and something installed by the software your using with the ethernet card. I my case its called "Ethernet Built-in"
choose that rather than localtalk.

Steps 1 you can and should use "dynamically"

Step 2 is correct. The drop down is easier to use than the slider.

Step 3 you add the name of the domain you use, I can add the name of my local domain or use my isp's domain, it depends on your setup but you should get by with anything after the @ in your email address.

Step 4 here you add the ip address of your OSX mac ethernet and the dns address of your isp, you'll have that info from your isp's website if you cant find it on the ibook.

Step 5 doesnt matter.

Step 6 isnt on the page but for us, we need to set the gateway to the address of the ibooks ethernet port, as a guess I'd say 192.168.1.1 for Nix or 192.168.0.1 for windows ICS. If this is the case you would then click OK Mactpc's window should still be open, change the ip address of the mac to one in the same range as your ibooks ethernet, eg: 192.168.1.11 if the ibook is 192.168.1.1. something between 1-254 and not used by another machine on that node.

Mactpc requires a reboot to come into effect. You should then check your settings again, I've never had this work the first time.
Your internet apps should now work.

good luck.
