The tool required is actually a long handled T-15 Torques driver, which the standard version is sold by most hardware stores, although you may need 1 or 2 long extension pieces, also available there. I myself ran into the same problem (I have almost 5 dozen "Toaster" macs), and it does tend to be the hard drive, which usually requires formatting to fix the problem.
