But Solaris 8 x86 doesn't have:

1) SSE, SSE2 or SSE3 support.
2) 64 bit amd
3) a whole host of X extensions that make video feasible.
4) openssl and kernel crypto support. If you use the bundled
    openssl in S10, you silently get the best crypto support
    available on the platform.

The problem with old software is that it's old and tends
to be slow.  That's fine if you don't have the source and
you want it to just work - that's a great selling point
for Solaris - not the old and slow software.

If we have the source and build env, recompilation against the
deployment platform (or at least close) will often significantly
improve performance.
