Hi Paul, What you may not have noticed in certain fronts is that Solaris developers are already working on providing Sun's customers/users with the latest in open source software and even some of the closed software you will find on Linux/BSD today.
Now, you won't find over 5,000-20,000 packages of open source software yet for Solaris as of today. Yet, you'll find that we've been building a lot of the packages that are either as good as their Linux/BSD builds or a bit better in packaging. You'll find close to 1,500 open source packages over at Blastwave.org as well as some work on the latest GNOME 2.12/2.14 which brings in new versions of GIMP, Gnucash, Planner, Koffice and other products for SOHO users. Like any project, it is knowing what the user wants or requires. Most of hte maintainers of the various Solaris packaging ISVs are able to assist you if they think a package can be built or needs further researched (or just point you to the people involved in doing the work). Blastwave.org has been involved in game developement/OpenGL ports, Antivirus and database development, and other software engineering initiatives with the help of over 20+ system administrators/software engineers. I don't think its a matter of getting a port done or improving on the process, just how full the plate might be for some people. Ken Mays @ EarthLink, Inc.
