Ah, sorry.. when I hear "accounting", I think massively huge things made for 10,000 employee corporations :-) Yeah, gnucash is one of our sore points. It's also one of the most annoying to package up, I hear. The thing about non-"professionals" doing work, is that you dont have to pay them professional salaries. Going from personal experience, an "incentive" of as little as $50, can have a remarkable motivating effect on people. (even for actual 'software professionals', who are doing this as a hobby)
