Dude. It's a file format. File formats don't solve problems. Data structures solve problems. XML is not a data structure, it is a very loosely specified way to arrange tags. By becoming so "multipurpose" it has the advantage of being able to be modified to do most anything, and the disadvantage of convincing many, many people that if they "put it into XML" that "you'll be able to read it with your XML tools". I think that the 3-character extension is so easy to recognize that people tend to assume that it represents a very stable, steady and reliable way of moving information around.
