I don't have that much to add, except that if she were to choose a Dell, you
could save quite a bit of money by not buying the fastest CPU - there is a
huge premium for that.  I just priced a Dell Home E1505 with your specs
except a 1.73 GHz CPU, and it was around $850.

I don't know how vital it would be for her (would it replace her desktop?)?

I would also invest in an extended warranty through AppleCare (sp?) or Dell
- probably well worth a few hundred.
