That is an old machine. Do you KNOW that it had a CD/DVD player rather than a CD only player?

What does the profiler say?

A really cheap fix would be an inexpensive eternal player / writer.

My friend Helene has a graphite CRT iMac, G3/500. Her CD/DVD player only plays CDs and spits out DVDs. Is her player half broken? Is it software/driver? Hardware? The drive itself is recognized in the System Profiler.

The iMac has been working very well until last week. She said something about a green screen. After trying to diagnose over the phone, I thought it might be the CRT also, but green went away as soon as she ejected an offending DVD, and hasn't returned.

She needs a new Mac but can't get one for at least 3 or 4 months. Where do we start fixing software? Thanks.
