Great. You have established that:
1) The drive works
2) The drive is able to read DVD format

Next thing to try is booting into safe mode (startup with shift key 
down). That should prevent any secondary drivers from loading and clinch 
the theory that it is a software driver problem.

Time to delete the /System/Library/Extensions.kextchach file. If that 
fails to resolve it look in /System/Library/Extensions/ for any odd .kext 
files that look like they may be related to the optical drive. Move them 
to the desktop and do a regular restart to see if they are the problem. 
Has she installed anything like an old version of Toast or drivers that 
came with some drive?

It is very unusual to have to do this type of debugging of OS X.
