Yes, besides having the app written, that is the only issue. Until a
better solution is found, it could be setup by default to work for
everyone (as RH, Windows XP, and probably SuSE do), any user who doesn't
want to see it can remove it easily (vs being able to change a cron
entry). Of course, on managed systems, the admin could just uninstall it
(since they probably have an automated setup).

A 5 line perl/bash script in /etc/cron.daily would be a simple
alternative for people who want the variety. Even better with small gui
to set when it runs, and which sources to update from (for people
wanting bleeding edge plf/texstar or even cooker).

Anyone who has started up an MTA by mistake on a server that has been
running msec 4 for a few months will know the pain of finding out ;-).
