I did this, in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers (if you use X)
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X +bs -dpms r
+bs turns backing store on, -dpms turns dpms off, r turns keyboard
auto-repeat on (not needed i think)
