I was going to say. I just re-installed 8.1 on an XFS partition and ran into the same issue.
Configuration: Intel PIII/450 256MB RAM Boot to Adaptec 2940UW, Seagate Barracuda SCSI Drive. When installing I received an error that the installed could not install the LILO boot loader, I choose the "sludge" area that is left over when you format a large volume hard drive. The installer put the boot loader there, and everything works fine. It appears to be a legitimate defect in either the boot loader installer or the boot loader LILO. Then I re-installed it with a separate ext3 /boot partition. beta2 would install but wouldn't boot for me until I put the /root and /boot (was always ext3) partitions together on one ext3 partition. No separate /boot. I wasn't about to reformat the entire system and lose everything. The boot continued to a point then went: "kernel panic VFS: unable to mount root at 03:05!" repeatedly. It was OK booting form a boot disk, it just wouldn't boot otherwise. -- Charlie Edmonton,AB,Canada Registered user 244963 at http://counter.li.org Even if you can deceive people about a product through misleading statements, sooner or later the product will speak for itself. - Hajime Karatsu
