Hi Mark, have you ever tried using fink ? You don't need to do much to compile it yourself with the help of fink. You will need Apple's Xcode, which you can get after registration for free. Once you have installed fink you really only type fink install [name of program you want], hit a couple of times y (yes) or whatever default value is requested. You have to do the usual edits in your .bashrc or .cshrc file to point X11 to your fink binary. You also have the option to download precompiled binaries, but not sure if Bill keeps still 10.4 - you might want to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
