I must admit to being a bit appalled by this running thread, come on people get a grip. While none of us enjoys being grounded this was not done just because no one could think of any thing better to do than to piss off a very small minority of people. First let me explain that there is a VERY REAL CONCERN about the potential and probability for bioterrorism. For those of you less initiated this is "bacterial or viral warfare". The most common, easily produced and most likely agent is anthrax. Now a little lesson Low cost of producing the anthrax material. -- Not high-technology. Knowledge is widely available. -- Easy to produce in large quantities. It is easy to weaponize. It is extremely stable. It can be stored almost indefinitely as a dry powder. -- It can be loaded, in a freeze-dried condition, in munitions or disseminated as an aerosol with crude sprayers. For contact or cutaneous anthrax, itching will occur at the site of exposure followed by the formation of a lesion. Untreated contact anthrax has a fatality rate of five to 20 percent, but with effective antibiotic treatment, few deaths occur. Initial symptoms for inhalational anthrax though are generally non-specific: low grade fever, a dry hacking cough, and weakness. The person may briefly improve after two to four days; however within 24 hours after this brief improvement, respiratory distress occurs with shock and death following shortly thereafter. Almost all cases (80% or greater) of inhalational anthrax, in which treatment was begun after patients have exhibited symptoms, have resulted in death, regardless of post-exposure treatment. Ok, now it's time to see if you have been paying attention and can apply a little logic. First to make anthrax most effective it must be inhaled, which means it must be disbursed into the atmosphere. Second we have the GA fleet which if the transponders are off and unless the radars are setup properly will frequently fail to show up on the scope. Slow moving, low flying airplanes make excellent delivery systems. Remember we are talking low tech here and I am reasonably sure the Coupe among many other aircraft fit into that category. Now I also hate to bring up the fact that right now there are several hundred pilots or student pilots in this country who have the potential and quite possibly the intention to perform such an act. Now should you think I'm full of shit, let me remind you that none of you geniuses were able to foresee the events of 9/11/01. Get a grip here folks, the government did not send 2 aircraft into the WTC and 1 into the Pentagon just to get GA out of the sky. Last, one more little reality check here, for those of you who have believed in the Black Helicopter myths. If they and the big brother technology so often claimed to be watching our every move were being employed as many have been believing then how did this crap happened.
