Modern flying helmets have a flap that snaps onto the headset band (after
you
take the pad off). No sewing required. You could use Velcro to make a
flap,
too.

Only problem with these things (like leather jackets) is that people think
they
are an affectation. The fact is, both evolved into open-cockpit flying
garb for
very practical reasons!
