There is a real nice article in AOPA Pilot for Sept. about Poplar Grove
Airport Ill. In that article is reference to Dick Thomas' funeral. On
that
day's celebration of his life, a transient pilot overflying the airport
had
an in-flight emergency and apparently tried to turn back to the field. He
augured in and they were unable to revive him. There were two tragedies
that day. Had the pilot tried to find a field straight ahead, instead of
trying to make the field he MIGHT still be alive to talk about it. WE
obviously do not know the complete story, but on the surface it appears
that he became a victim of the things we've been talking about under the
stall/spin thread.
