By doing it at or below maneuvering speed for that weight. That's a good speed to know without having to look it up. I think there are four speeds that are pretty important to know without having to look them up. 1. Vx 2. Vy 3. Max maneuvering speed (the speed for the lightest weight) 4. Best glide I don't think it's as important to memorize stall speeds because a) they are marked by the white and green arcs anyway, and b) the stall almost never occurs where the arcs say. How did I get so far off track here? I forgot what you asked. Oh, now I remember, it was about the 180. >does this vary with an engine out? You ought to go up to maybe 3000 feet and try it. That would be fun. It depends on the airspeed you start with. If the engine craps out from cruise, you could descend and maintain speed or make a quick level turn and slow down. I think descending is more likely what you'd want to do, to maintain decent speed. >I'm just curious what you all have to say vs what my instructors said. >Of course you should never get yourself in a position where you need >to do this, right (box canyon, clouds, etc.)?! I do have one rule of thumb for flying in canyons, that is that I always have an "out" which means I must always be able to make a descending 180 turn. The reason is that if you are barely able to hold altitude while straight and level, then you wouldn't be able to hold altitude in a turn. You would have to lower the nose and descend quite a bit to keep from stalling. If I don't see a way to make a descending 180, then I know I have could have a problem soon. Oh, I think that the minimum diameter of a safe 180 turn, without adding lots of load (like a 180 in mountains) is probably about the length of a base leg at a small airport. I don't know how many feet it is, but it might be easy to visualize in the air. Maybe 1000 feet?
