I wonder how the presence/absence of the split elevator plays into this
analysis?

As I understand it, without the split, you have to carry a little more
airspeed, to have 
the authority to flare (particularly in a D model, where the up travel is
more limited).

Could this be exactly the 'little too much speed' that Dave asserts is a
critical factor?
