Rob, I will add anoother "difficulty report", for Ercoupe. This could happen on any Continental and maybe Lycoming utilizing a movable flap in the Carb heat cowling.
On engine run-up, all was normal, including a good RPM drop on application of Carb Heat. However, as I flew away from the field, I developed a loss of power when passing thru an updraft. - very strange.. Application of Carb heat made no noticeable difference in engine performance.. On return to the field, I noticed that there was no longer a decrease in RPM with application of carb heat. On inspection, I found one of the carb heat flap attachment bolts was gone. Also, the flap was mounted on the wrong side ( carb side) of the flap shaft. This allowed the flap to be sucked up into the air intake cowling, blocking the air intake to the carb... Repair involved re-mounting the flap on the outside of the shaft with proper hardware. Regards, Harry Francis N 93530 Blacksburg, Va.
