My 12v12 server seems to be packed most of the day. The only thing
that has been killing us is when an update comes in and we don't know
about it until the server has been dead for hours and I've happened to
have checked and notice it's dead. Then I check Steam and see there
was an update. Then I wait for my hosting service to bundle the update
(such as last night, which they had to do around 11pm, due to the time
it was released). That just totally kills us when we're trying to
build a community during the important early weeks.

Otherwise, I've seen a lot of people coming back to CS who haven't
played in ages and are excited, even with some of the remaining
problems. A lot of the decline is likely from those who haven't played
CS before and just checked it out and moved on when they realized they
couldn't get killstreaks and prestiges.

As for maps -- people seem content with the classic maps. There's a
reason they're classic. And the only "new maps" that people seem to be
clamoring for are remakes of the old classics that they loved, too
(727, assault, vegas, ice, militia, etc).

Of course, the segregation of community into a sort of second-class
citizen may not be doing too great for giving people that real sense
of CS community if they haven't formerly played CS, either.
