I would try the image sprite and just change the background coordinates as necessary. I don't think it is going to be as big of a loading problem as you believe.
Try using this: http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/index.html Using that logo.jpg link, it says that on a 56K connection it would take 1.82 seconds.
