I know exactly where you are coming from, I was there a couple of years ago.
A couple of bits of good news. (1) it is not as hard as it looks to make the next steps, and (2) there are hosting companies out there who offer exactly what you need for very modest fees. I have had very good experiences with dreamhost.com, but there are lots of other outfits out there offering similar things.
