You're comparing apples and oranges. Windows (and XP especially) and Linux, or OS X. What you have to compare is font-rendering on the same platform for embedded vs native (installed) fonts. Font-rendering on XP always looks poop in my book. And just for fun, try viewing some Japanese pages on XP.
