This does not mean that serving XHTML 1.0/1.1 as text/html does not ensure cross browser and search engine support. I can assure everyone that serving XHTML 1.0/1.1 as text/html works fine with search engines as well as browsers. If someone knows of a browser or search engine that does not like this, please say so. Until then, while serving XHTML as text/html may be bad form, it's not destructive. I think using XHTML is good for the design community, because it tells the browser companies that we really want them to get their browsers to support XHTML correctly.
