2 May 1946, RAND Corp published a Preliminary Design for an Experimental
World Circling Spaceship. The 324-page study, the result of a crash effort
commissioned by the Army Air Forces, focused on the utility of a satellite
for gathering scientific data on cosmic rays, gravitation, geophysics,
terrestrial magnetism, meteorology & properties of the upper atmosphere.
The report also identified potential military missions for a satellite:
missile guidance, weapons delivery, weather reconnaissance, communica-
