I have never read "Mein Kampf", but I had a similar reaction like the one you
describe the first time I saw Reifenstahl's (sp?) "Triumph of the Will"...

It was in the early 1970s, I was about 20 years old, and the film was being
shown for the first time since WWII in its entirety on the PBS station out of
NYC...

It was subtitled, and I don't understand German. But about 20 minutes into
the film, I stopped reading the subtitles, and just listened to Hitler giving
a speech...

I listened for about 10 minutes, enthralled. Couldn't understand the words,
but I was totally mesmerized. I finally forced myself to look away, shaking
my head to clear it, because I felt as if I was being caught up in some sort
of spell...

If it had that sort of effect on me, not being able to understand the language,
I could definitely understand why the German populace became mindless zombies
under his spell...

And yes, I understand...understood at the time...that that was Leni Reifenstahl's
plan with the way she made that film, the whole idea was to present a new religion,
with Hitler as its god...I knew it was a masterful piece of propaganda (which
everyone who is particularly interested in how the media manipulates us should see),
but it still didn't matter. I still got caught up in the spell...
