Perhaps I should have mentioned that I ran firefox on the local linux machine,
not on the Sun. I expect the firefox on the sun would have been too old to be
useful anyway.

After writing that message, I killed the solaris ctwm (using f.quit via a ctwm
menu), and restarted it locally.
I then noticed these two lines in the xterm window logged through to the Sun,
in which I had given the ctwm command:
X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.
X connection to localhost:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
I am not sure, but I suspect they come from two events.
1. Before going to a meeting I tried launching a lock screen program from a ctwm
menu, and it failed, so I ran the command in a local xterm. Presumably the
failure explains the 'connection rejected' message.
2. I used the ctwm f.quit invoked from a menu. That would seem to account for
the second message. I don't normally see that because ctwm is run by .xinitrc
invoked via 'startx'.
I am probably labouring the obvious -- just for completeness.
