In the words of Keyshawn Johnson, Come On Mannnn! With no disrespect to anyone
on this board, smoking does not cause littering - littering causes littering.
If you will go out and look at the debris on the road and in the parks, and
beaches, etc. the vast majority of the trash by volume is fast food bags and
plastic drink bottles. What are we gonna do, ban McDonalds and Coke? Whenever
I smoke something, I always stamp it out, pour water on it (to prevent fires)
and throw it in the trash like most repsonsible people. I am not supporting or
admonishing smokers. I am just tired of the daily whittling away of our
individual liberty to the point where we are just becoming a bunch of lemmings
purcolating in a festering stew of mediocrity.

Subject: Re: [COWs] Ride in the lane

Amen,

I spent this past week at Avon on the outer banks. Didn't get to ride my new
bike as a result of the accident so I went to the beach with eight grand kids
and had great fun. Butts all over the beach are only part of the issue. It
seemed that everyplace I went on the beach, cigarette smoke followed me and the
smoke takes away so much from my enjoyment. While I agree that it would be
better if government wasn't involved, that seems to be the only way to control
it at least to some degree. It seems so good to go into smoke-free restaurants
now.

Well said, I am not in favor of more gov't intervention, butt the smokers have
brought this on themselves. No one seems to want to take responsibility for
their actions or those of their children. One reason I retired.

....if the smoke ban passes then it will help the 'butt litter'
issue for both CB and WB. The registered WB voters will have
the opportunity this Nov'12 to express their desire for a smoke-free
WB or not. The WB board of alderman have voted against a smoke-
ban on WB twice now. This girl, Danielle Richardet, has pretty much
proven the need for smoking to be banned on beaches. Here is her
blog. http://itstartswithme-danielle.blogspot.com/
Well documented and evidence for the rule. Especially interesting
is the comparison to Santa Monica beach butt litter count and the WB
butt litter count:

For the next 100 days, my friend Sara who writes The Daily
Ocean<http://thedailyocean.blogspot.com/>blog will be counting and tallying the
number of cigarette butts she finds during her 20 minute beach clean ups in
Santa Monica-- a SMOKE-FREE beach.
We're comparing a smoke-free beach (Santa Monica) to a beach with no smoking
ban (Wrightsville Beach). We hope to answer the question:
Do smoking bans really help the cigarette litter problem?
46 beach clean ups-- 259 cigarette butts in Santa Monica
30 beach clean ups-- 6,499 cigarette butts in Wrightsville Beach

My personal position?
I hate to see more regulation occur. The USA was founded on people having
freedoms
and opportunities take make their lives better. Having government get too
involved
creates dependency and stifles personal freedoms and responsibility. Smokers
should have
the freedom to smoke as long as the smoke and their butt litter does not
encroach on people
who choose not to smoke.

That being said our society has, degraded to a level where people seem to have
lost their
common sense and decency and continue to trash our public Beaches and roadways
with
butt litter. I feel many smokers have ruined their own personal freedoms and
the
smoke-ban should be enacted. Sad, but a necessity as shown by Danielle's
documentation.

Boils down to this. Many people just do not care anymore. I think that is a
by-product
of the lack of good parenting in our children today.

Funny thing, as many even mentioned from time to time about my more left
position
in the lane. Then that infamous day in feb '11 after a grueling into the wind
pull
with all the bike monsters nipping at my wheel, I resigned myself to the back
of the
pace line and getting dropped on 97E hills rode the white line for some oxygen
relief.
Sad to say my lack of attention to the leftmost positioning is what I blame to
that white pickup taking me out.

Right you are Jim and Kim, road position is very important to a cyclist's
well-being. Even if you have to piss some people off. Now you guys want to
hear my "asking the lady to please pick up her butt litter off the beach"
story?
Funny how intelligent and educated people can be so ignorant to common sense~

James: I hope you are doing well!

After Kim's post on the left turn I have been more conscious of riding further
out in the lane especially solo. Today heading out Bend of the river toward
old carriage noticed a car coming up on me, put out the slow hand signal. Car
stayed a safe distance back and waited until no oncoming traffic and then
passed all the way over in the left lane. Saw the car at the store on old
carriage so I decided to stop and thank the driver for not trying to squeeze
by. She said she almost didn't see me as she was on the phone. Said her son
rode and she tried to be careful around bikes. Phone not withstanding had I
not been out in the lane she might not have seen me at all. Be careful out
there.
Road fixed gear for 22 miles at times rolling at 19/20.
Great day to be on the bike.
