A reflection on today's Scripture:

In our First Reading today, Paul exhorts us to have the same mind as
that of Christ Jesus. On this very important Election Day, we need to
ask that if Jesus were an American citizen, how would He vote in this
year 2000? He would certainly bring tremendous love with Him--love for
the poor and the handicapped, love for the sick and the elderly--and
love for children. Certainly His love for the unborn would be part of
His decision.

In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of heaven as a great banquet in which all
would be welcomed and all would be filled. We must pray on this
Election Day that whoever is elected will work to make this great
country a refuge for immigrants, a haven for the underprivileged, a
nation in which individual freedoms are respected and defended -- for
are we not still "one nation under God", with liberty and justice for
all? May it one day again include justice for the unborn."
