A reflection on today's Scripture:

Jesus tells us that the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed, "the
smallest of seeds." Since we are all assistant gardeners for the
kingdom, a lot depends on what kind of seeds we put in our garden. If
we put in love, we will reap love; if we put in envy, we will reap
envy. And we will be astounded at the magnitude of the results. Even a
little love will banish the isolation and loneliness of a member of
our church; on the other hand, even a little envy and suspicion will
spoil the trust and harmony of some parish committee.

We so worry about the climate of war and violence that poisons the
nations of the earth. How can the kingdom of God prevail? By the seeds
of justice sown daily in service to the poor, unselfish giving to the
needs of our community, unrelenting prayer for the victims of abuse,
exploitation, and racial hatred.

It is a matter of heart and soul. The kingdom of God is within us,
operating through our faith and our courage, as well as outside of us
in the cries of the marginalized, the powerless, the sick. If we
nurture first the seeds of faith through the wisdom of God's truth
pondered in prayer, we will suddenly find in us the desire and the
confidence to move outwards.

The grace of God will always water the seed we sow, multiplying its
yield through the mysterious action of God's power, and bringing it to
fruition. We need only plant the seeds, care for the nurslings, and
with true humility, rely totally on the providence of God for the
results."
