A reflection on today's Scripture:
Today's Gospel contains a little story that always baffled me,
perhaps because I didn't make the effort to learn its wisdom. It's
about the servant who cleverly and dishonestly used his master's
goods for his own gain -- and the master praised him! The purpose of
this story is that we should imitate the intensity and cleverness of
the world in our pursuit of holiness in the kingdom of God.
St. Paul decries the lackadaisical attitude of the Church at
Philippi, claiming that their only God was their belly. As we read
and study the wisdom of the Church, we learn that we're to focus on
the "things above", that is, the spiritual life that God wants to
share with us. But that life comes upon us neither by osmosis nor
like manna in the desert. No, we must actively pursue and find the
"Hound of Heaven" who seeks us, who desires to share with us all the
joy and glory of life everlasting.
But first must come our conversion, our leaving behind the worldly
life and all of its allures that separate us from the Real Life. We
are called to seek only the Kingdom of God. In our journey to that
goal, we'll learn that true happiness is to be found only there.
