Hello Roumano,

there is no problem for the binary!

portage always builds from real scratch. as often and reproducable as you want.
the only thing with the -9999: it does a git pull.

emerge darktable or ebuild path/to/darktable-whatever.ebuild merge

is the same (except opt path) as

select version: tar xf../git checkout version or 'git pull' for -9999
rm -rf build
./build.sh
rm -rf /opt/darktable
cd build; make install

database, cache and xmp's are the *real* beasts independant of the binary...

back them up prior execution of a new binary!
~/.cache/darktable/ (mipmap)
~/.config/darktable/ (settings and db)

the xmp sidecars: backup and replay if something got worse.
this is where your work is. hours and hours of editing, tagging...

i'm using overlay fs (unionfs) for fast switching:
rawfiles readonly: nobody has writeaccess, not me nor any program. raw files
will NEVER EVER get touched.
xmp+generated files rw, different flavours:
'darkxmp','darktest','aftershotproxmp','bibble5xmp'

darkxmp: unionfs-fuse -o cow -o uid=1000 -o gid=1000
/data/digidarkxmp=RW:/data/digiorig=RO /data/digi

working: only on /data/digi.

and yes: accidently i messed up the db with importing from digiorig: deleted db
and reimported all pictures.
(fairly fast, no problem .. but not a daily-task...)

too complicated? good backup is enough.
i feel good in knowing that the raws are 'save'.

weekend is for taking pictures! (oh yes..and elections on sunday)
ciao
Wolfgang
