OK guys, if you are going to have a serious go at this, I can offer the
following from my prior usage:

a) buy, beg or borrow a spectrophotometer of some sort. It is only the device
that matters as you won't be using its supplied software or charts.
b) install and run Argyle and use that to print an Argyle test chart. Don't
bother with the test chart or (probably windows) software that comes with your
device. You are going to be using Argyle profiling software and Argyle format
test charts, and it will do a much more comprehensive job than any entry/mid
level commercial software. It will drive the ColorMunki well beyond its normal
capabilities (probably) but is complex to understand.
c) Print the Argyle generated test chart image using Gutenprint with whatever
paper/ink/resolution combination you want the profile for. You MUST choose the
'Uncorrected' mode within Gutenprint for printing the test image.
d) Now use the Argyle tools to drive the ColorMunki and measure the printed
test image. This will generate your .icc profile.
e) Now try printing a real image using gutenprint in uncorrected mode and with
your new shiny profile selected.

I must confess I hit a brick wall and couldn't get step (d) working properly.
Graeme Gill (author of Argyle) was good enough to provide a patch which helped
somewhat but we concluded that the firmware in my, otherwise excellent,
spectrophotometer needed upgrading and with a borrowed device I couldn't do
that.

Good luck,
Rob.

I can borrow a ColorMunki. But I don't know how to print the charts. I have
seen it working and the chart was auto-magically printed from the Windows
tools. I haven't looked into the CD, maybe the charts are just there...

Sorry, I have difficult time understanding this. What do you mean profile
gutenprint? Printing using gutenprint for the charts? Does that mean that we
can print without gutenprint? ... I may be confused :) I have installed the
gutenprint debian package, so I do print with gutenprint right? Do I have an
option to not use gutenprint?

Great! Let's work in parallel. I'll send a set of charts to some Web service in
France to get profiles. I'll report my finding.

I'm all with you to create a simple and understandable procedure for printing
on GNU/Linux. I did not thought it was so difficult to get right! I was spoiled
by Lightroom :)
