BANGLADESH:

Thief gets death penalty for murdering Hindu priest:

A court in Bangladesh has awarded death penalty to a young man and
sentenced 6 others to life imprisonment for slaying a Hindu priest 2 years
ago, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

Judge M Hasan Imam of the Speedy Trial Tribunal in Chittagong handed down
the death sentence to Shafiqul Islam, 27, for the murder of Madan Gopal
Goswami on Apr 28, 2002, the Daily Star said.

Goswami was a priest at the Radha Madan temple and 'ashram' in Manikchhari
Upazila of Khagrachhari hill district.

A gang of thieves entered the temple at night and demanded money from
Goswami. When he refused, they stabbed him to death. They also made off
with a gold statuette.

The Bangladesh home ministry listed the case as "sensational" and sent it
to the speedy trial court.
