PAKISTAN:

Murderer given death sentence

District and Sessions Judge Syed Akhter Irshad gave death sentence to a
murder convict on Tuesday.

According to the prosecution, convict Muhammad Hanif, a resident of Tan
Sukh, had killed Muhammad Arif over a monetary dispute in March 2003.

The court also ordered Hanif to pay Rs 200,000 fine to the victims family
as compensation. The accused will face 6 months rigorous imprisonment if
he defaults on the fine. Meanwhile, a senior civil judge in Islamabad
denied the bail application of a sodomy accused, Sharjeel Ahmed. The court
did not accept Ahmeds defence councils argument that the case was false
and rejected the bail application. The court directed the prosecution
witnesses to appear in court on November 8.
