SINGAPORE:

Nguyen supporters voice death penalty opposition

Adelaide supporters of an Australian man on death row in Singapore have
held a lunchtime rally to voice their opposition to the death penalty.

About 30 people sat on the steps of Parliament House to show support for
Van Nguyen, 25, who is facing execution for attempting to traffic heroin
in 2002.

Amnesty International branch president Vicki Jacobs says campaigners still
hope the Singapore Government can be persuaded to grant him clemency.

"What we're hoping to achieve is to get as many signatures as possible
that we can send to the President of Singapore, requesting that he commute
the death sentence for Van Nguyen," she said.
