Btw., a closed bug report will be archived and forgotten, so the chance of someone stepping up (be it for a proper translation into German or a cleverer diversion) is now reduced. Would it be wrong to reassign the bug report to a different (pseudo-)package and reopen the report? The diversion mechanism seems to belong to the package “dpkg”; if the diversion mechanism works (approximately) as expected, consider an all-catcher pseudo-package that is usually taken for the case that each involved package performs (approximately) as expected, but the results are, erm, surprising: “wnpp” and “general”.
Out of curiosity, I also tried `info zgrep`. This gave me an English info page “1 Overview” for gzip regardless of the values of the LANG and LC_ALL variables (I tried “en_US.utf8”, “de_DE.utf8”, and “C”): “ Next: Sample, Prev: Top, Up: Top 1 Overview ********** ‘gzip’ reduces the size of the named files using Lempel-Ziv coding (LZ77). Whenever possible, each file is replaced by one with the […] ” This overview document doesn't even mention “zgrep”, so this is a (probably related) bug or bug symptom in its own right.
