   You can add a new panel and drag to the right screen edge to make it 
vertical.
   Go to panel properties and increase the size to make it fatter. Then 
add a
   "Window List" applet to it and you will have a readable vertical list 
of app
   tabs.

   The other alternative is to add a "Window Selector" applet that 
appears as a
   small button on the panel. Clicking it will bring up a list of the 
running apps
   which you can switch to.
