Sorry, no.  The text should be displayed when you hover the mouse over
the icon, though.

Some people like the Deskbar applet, which makes it easy to organize
your favorite launchers into one applet.

You might also try asking this sort of question on the public GNOME
mail lists.  You might get tips that you wouldn't find on the
Solaris specific mail lists.  Try the gnome-hackers mail list for
example:
